The Casa do Campo de São Francisco was built by Sergeant Major José Caetano da Costa in the first half of the 18th century.
The adjacent chapel, which had already existed since 1634, was then rebuilt and integrated into the eighteenth-century façade of the Casa do Campo de São Francisco
Since it was built, the Casa do Campo de São Francisco has had other functions besides housing, namely as the first seat of the Micaelense Assembly.
It has been in the family of the current owners since the mid-19th century when it was bought by the 2nd Viscount of Laranjeiras, Manuel de Medeiros da Costa Araújo e Albuquerque.
Since 1984 it has been classified as a Property of Public Interest.
